Who she teaches
Students range from ages 4 to 60 and over, and from absolute beginners to players preparing for auditions and conservatory entry. Adult beginners and returning players are as welcome as children starting out.
Where lessons happen
In person across the Boston area. Online lessons are available across the U.S. and internationally, and follow the same structure as in-person ones — the same repertoire, the same pace, over video.
What a lesson is built on
Technique first — posture, bow control, intonation, reading. But the goal past that is musical independence: the ability to shape a phrase yourself rather than copy a demonstration.
About your teacher
Youngmi holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Violin Performance from Mannes School of Music, where she graduated on merit scholarship and received the Mannes Dean's Award, and a Graduate Performance Diploma from Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where she was named a winner of the Boston Conservatory Concerto Competition. She performs as a soloist and chamber musician at halls including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Boston Symphony Hall — so what she teaches is what she does.
Questions
- Do you teach complete beginners?
- Yes. Students arrive at every stage, from a first lesson on a rented instrument through pre-professional preparation, and ages range from 4 to 60 and over.

- Both. In-person lessons take place across the Boston area. Online lessons are available to students anywhere in the United States and internationally.
- What will my child actually learn?
- Technique is the foundation — posture, bow control, intonation, reading — but the aim beyond that is musical independence: a student who can shape a phrase on their own rather than only reproduce what a teacher demonstrated.
- How experienced is the teacher?
- Youngmi Hwang has taught violin for more than ten years. She holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Violin Performance from Mannes School of Music and a Graduate Performance Diploma from Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
